What is Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)?
FGM is also known as female circumcision or cutting and by other terms such as sunna, gudniin, halalays, tahur, megrez and khitan among others.
It is carried out on young girls most commonly before puberty. FGM is illegal in the UK but still affects hundreds of young girls living here. Many have the procedure done in this country or are taken to their country of origin.

How Can We Help?
If you suspect that you, or a girl you know, are at risk of FGM Shetal Gudgeon, in our Family team, is a specialist and can help you apply for an FGM Protection Order as well as represent you within those proceedings. With the help of our support agency partners we will ensure you are protected.
What can I expect to happen?
Under the provision of an FGM Protection Order the Court has the power to remove passports and travel documents prohibiting someone from taking the girl out of the country or from undergoing the procedure. It is possible to achieve this within hours of seeing a solicitor.
How much will it cost me?
